Good questions
Before you reach out.
Can't find your answer? There's no such thing as a silly question, just ask.
Ask me directlyDo I need a big reason or label to book a session?
No. If you feel like there's something heavy on you or something you'd like to work on, that's all the reason you need.
What happens in the first session?
Mostly we just talk. I'll get a sense of what's bringing you in and what you'd like to feel different, and you can ask me anything. There's no pressure to share more than you want to. The first session is as much about you deciding it's a good fit as anything else.
How long are sessions, and how many will I need?
Sessions are around 50 minutes. This kind of wellness counselling tends to be short to medium-term and focused rather than open-ended, so many people come for a handful of sessions. We'll set out what you'd like to work on early on and review how things are going together as we go.
Is everything confidential?
Yes. What you share stays between us, within the standard ethical and legal limits of counselling practice. I'll talk you through exactly what that means in our first session so there are no surprises.
Do you offer sessions online or in person?
Both. In-person sessions are in Cape Town (10a Kloof Nek Road), and online sessions are available if that's easier for your week or you're further afield. Just let me know which you'd prefer when you enquire.
I've never done counselling before, is that okay?
Completely okay, and very common. You don't need to know how it works or have the right words ready. Showing up is the hard part, and we'll take the rest at your pace.
Do you work with children?
Yes, within my scope as a Specialist Wellness Counsellor (ASCHP). I offer age-appropriate, supportive wellness counselling for younger clients, with the consent and involvement of a parent or guardian throughout. This is supportive counselling, not psychological assessment, diagnosis, or therapy for clinical conditions; where a child needs that kind of care, I'll say so and help you find the right registered professional. If you're enquiring for your child, mention their age and what's going on and we'll find the right approach together.
Why is it called “CBT in CPT” if you’re not a psychologist?
The name simply reflects that my counselling is informed by CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and based in Cape Town. I'm a Specialist Wellness Counsellor registered with the ASCHP, not a registered psychologist, so I draw on CBT tools within supportive wellness counselling rather than providing psychotherapy or clinical treatment.
